Claude vs Cowork vs Claude Code (Terminal) vs Claude Code (desktop) vs automation tools vs your mom

How do you keep up with everything Anthropic is releasing right now?

Genuinely asking. Because over the last few months they've launched new products, new interfaces, new capabilities dropping for what feels like a daily basis.

Dispatch.

Claude Code.

Cowork.

Each one announced with enthusiasm, each one with a community of very online, very opinionated people declaring it the only tool you'll ever need.

Claude just killed X

Some of those people mean well. Most of them do. But the umbrella statements have got to stop.

"You should be using Claude Code in the terminal — it's the future." "Zapier and N8n are dead." "Just automate everything with Claude."

In my experience trying to actually understand these tools: none of these are true. Or rather, they're only true in the right context — which is exactly the problem with saying them out loud with no context attached.

Here's what I think gets missed in the noise: a non-technical person can get serious value right now just by installing Claude's desktop app and using Cowork or the desktop version of Claude Code.

They never have to open Terminal.

That's a valid, powerful setup. Yes, learning the terminal would be a good way to learn but these tools are only going to improve and eventually the ceiling on the desktop app will start to matter. But today, you don't need to go there if it intimidates you.

The real question isn't which tool is best. It's which tool is best for what.

So I did the obvious thing: I asked Claude to explain it. I gave it the question I'd been wrestling with. When does it make sense to use Claude chat, Claude Code (terminal), Claude Code (desktop), Cowork, or third-party automation tools like Zapier and N8n? And then asked it to lay out the answer as a reference table which you'll find below.

A few honest caveats before you use it:

This is LLM-generated. I've applied whatever judgment I have to sense-check it, and it holds up but I'm not an expert in all of these tools, and you should factor that in.

I was also aware that asking Claude which tools are best might produce a somewhat self-serving answer. I was pleased to see it didn't. There are several rows in this table where Zapier or N8n is clearly the right call, and Claude said so. That gave me a bit more confidence in the rest of it.

Take it as a starting point, not gospel. But if you're where I was a few weeks ago (confused, a bit overwhelmed, not sure what to reach for) I hope it's useful.
